Kenyan Prime Minister calls for arrest of gays

Raila Odinga
Kenya's Prime Minister Raila Odinga has ordered the arrest of gay couples in the country.
Addressing a rally in the capital Nairobi on Sunday, the prime minister termed their behaviour "unnatural".
“If found the homosexuals should be arrested and taken to relevant authorities,” Mr Odinga said.

The premier thrilled the crowd in a largely conservative country when he asserted that the country's recent census showed there were more women than men and there was no need for same sex relationships.
He termed it "madness" for a man to fall in love with another man while there were "plenty of women" and added that there was no need for women to engage in lesbianism "yet they can bear children".
Mr Odinga’s statements are likely to rub Kenyan activists the wrong way, who have recently been emboldened to go public to campaign against widespread homophobia.
The remarks also come months after the country's special programmes minister Esther Murugi attracted the wrath of Kenyans by calling for recognition and acceptance of gays, a topic almost anathema in the conservative country of 40 million.
On Sunday, Mr Odinga accused the ‘No’ team [that opposed the passage of Kenya's new constitution] of misleading Kenyans during the campaigns that the new constitution recognises same sex relationships.

Money Laundering: EFCC Probes Oyakhilome

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, FCC, has disclosed that it is investigating some officials of Christ Embassy and its founder Rev. Chris  Oyakhilome, over money laundering.

EFCC’s spokesman, Mr. Femi Babafemi, in a telephone interview yesterday, disclosed  that Oyakhilome and some officials of his ministry are being investigated over $35  million that was illegally moved out of the country.

Babafemi said no arrest has been made, but investigation is still going on. Details about the illegal transactions were sketchy as at press time. P.M.NEWS gathered further that Oyakhilome and some prominent members of his church  had been placed under surveillance by the EFCC.

The probe, it was learnt, has sent shock waves to members of the church across the  world, and many of the nominal members, who were allegedly used in the money  laundering scheme, are now scrambling for safe havens. The 59-year old pastor and his ministry had faced many controversies in recent  years, bothering on preaching falsehood.

Oyakhilome has been accused of staging healing sessions attended by thousands who  give money to the ministry hoping to be healed by the pastor. He has also been  accused of planting people in the crowd to promote his healing powers.

The pastor has also been accused of offering congregants who attend his school of  healing money to act as if they are sick and then heals them at his “Night of Bliss”  programmes. The ministry has been accused of coercing its members to make large donations to the  church even though they are poor.

Church members regularly donate large sums of money and materials to the church as  they are told they will be rewarded by God. This has led to a number of members losing their possessions as they default on  other payments in order to finance the lifestyle of leaders in the church.

An organisation, Treatment Action Campaign, also accused Oyakhilome of preaching  falsehood on claims to heal life threatening diseases such as HIV.

Report Says ‘In Five Years, Nigeria Gained One Year of Life Expectancy'

Life expectancy in Nigeria rose by a marginal one year between 2005 and 2010 becoming one of the best in sub-Saharan Africa, where six countries record expectancy rates worse today than 1970, according to a new United Nations report.

The annual United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) Human Development Index (HDI) which was released in New York early November, and launched yesterday in Abuja, showed that Nigeria's overall HDI within the past five years, remained unchanged. - 234next

Government extends ban on old cars to 15yrs. Also lifts ban on toothpick, fabrics etc

Finance Minister, Segun Aganga with Minister of State, Finance, Yabafa Lawan Wabi at the press briefing with journalists in Abuja yesterday Nov 29, 2010.
The Minister of Finance, Dr Olusegun Aganga yesterday announced government’s economic blue print going forward which included extending the age of banned used motor vehicles’ importation from 10 years to 15 years from year of manufacture. Government also removed certain items from the existing import prohibition list.
The Minister of Finance who made the revelation at a press briefing in Abuja also stated that the Ministry has “conducted a review of the existing Import Prohibition List and Tariff Structure in line with best practices to review the impact of the prohibitions on the Government’s revenue and local industry on an on-going basis. The NEMT held extensive consultations with key stakeholders and found that import bans are ineffective and result in a huge revenue loss to Government through significant trade diversion to neighbouring countries and the routine smuggling of banned goods into the country. In addition, the items on the Prohibition List cost more than what obtain in neighbouring countries due to the smuggling activities.

“It is expected that these trends are likely to continue; therefore we have received Presidential approval to replace the bans with tariffs to protect domestic industries with regards to the following items:
i. Cassava: A 15% levy in addition to the substantive 20% duty;
ii.  Toothpick: A 20% levy and duty of 20%;
iii. Furniture: A 20% levy and duty of 20%;
iv. Textile Fabrics & Articles (Lace Fabric, Brocade, Voile, African Print etc. and Made-up Garments): A 20% levy and duty of 20%; and

President Jonathan Offered Us $50,000 Bribe, But We Returned It - Pastor Tunde Bakare Confirms

Fiery Lagos-based pastor, Tunde Bakare, has confirmed to Saharareporters that President Goodluck Jonathan proivede a $50, 000 cash bribe to a delegation of the Save Nigeria Group that visisted him last Monday, but that the group sent back the money.

Pastor Bakare’s confirmation came in the midst of a tepid denial of our earlier report by Tony Uranta, one of Mr. Jonathan's political operatives. Uranta had claimed on his Facebook page yesterday that Saharareporters misrepresented the crux of the meeting between the president and the Pastor Bakare-led delegation.

Specifically, Uranta denied that Jonathan discussed his ambition to run for office with the SNG delegation. He also stated that no money was offered to the SNG team and claimed that, contrary to our earlier report, the Bakare group had not asked him to return the bribe money to Jonathan.

But in a telephone interview with Saharareporters on Sunday evening, Pastor Bakare confirmed that the details of our earlier exclusive report were factual and unimpeachable.

Bakare, who has a reputation for speaking out fearlessly on current political issues, affirmed that the Minister of the Niger Delta, Godsday Orubebe, had offered the SNG delegation the sum of $50,000 on behalf of President Jonathan. The SNG had met with Jonathan to review his performance in office.

In the phone interview, Pastor Bakare stated categorically that his team was indeed offered money after it submitted a position paper on why it was opposed to the president's ambition to be re-elected. He confirmed that the cash was immediately returned to sender through Uranta, shortly after it was presented to the SNG delegation.

The SNG convener told Saharareporters that his team felt terribly embarrassed and offended by the orchestrated attempt by Jonathan and his team to buy the SNG’s support through illicit means.

An obviously angry Bakare said, “You can quote me. I don't do deals and I don't lie. Tony [Uranta] could be saving his own face. Tony lied that he didn't collect the money from us. There are living witnesses. Orubebe has confirmed to me that the money was returned. Mr. President is aware through Oronto Douglas that we returned his money through Tony.”

Bakare said he, Yinka Odumakin and other SNG officials went to the meeting with Jonathan with a written document that explained why the SNG would not support his candidacy.

“We submitted a document regarding the culture of impunity in which he (Jonathan) continues to swim," he said.

Quote of the day!

“I think it is important to point out that the current effort by President Goodluck Jonathan to continue in office after ending his tenure on 29th May 2011, instead of ensuring we have free and fair elections in this country, is a reflection of the governance crisis. We have a President who is trying to self succeed himself through a process which amount to a political coup in his own political party. In a democracy nobody should think that he/she has to be president or there will be no Nigeria. I have to make this point because a Minister had warned that if Goodluck Jonathan does not emerge as President there will be crisis in Nigeria, so if this is the case what is the point of conducting elections?” - M. D. Yusuf, former IG of Police and Presidential candidate

Rihanna's still talking about Chris Brown

In a recent interview with GQ magazine, Rihanna talks (again) about her break up with Chris Brown.

Rihanna says,

“Sometimes when you’re on the inside of a relationship like that, you can’t see it clearly for what it is. I left – it was the best feeling. It was so freeing…I witnessed it happening to my mum and I said I would never let that happen to me – and then it was happening. Now, when I look back, it bugs me out that I couldn’t see it for what it was.”
Guess it takes a while to finally let go...

Man Fathered 10 Children With Daughter

Elvira Gomez
Victim Juana Elvira Gomez had 10 children by her dad

A man in Argentina has been arrested for raping his daughter and fathering 10 children with her over 30 years.

Juana Elvira Gomez, 43, did not report the alleged abuse to police until recently, when her father Armando Gomez, 62, was arrested for robbery.

She claimed her father started beating and raping her from the age of 13, some 11 years after her mother died.
"I felt that I was worse than a prisoner for 30 years because I couldn't even talk with anybody," Ms Gomez told the Clarin newspaper.

"He raped me, beat me for any reason, didn't let me approach other people and always had a loaded gun.
"He told me: 'I'm going to go to prison, but I'm going to kill you first.'"

DNA tests have confirmed that Gomez is the father of nine of his daughter's 10 children, aged between six and 26.
Tests could not be carried out on Ms Gomez's first child - a boy born when she was 15 - because he committed suicide.

Ms Gomez, of Santa Fe, said her eldest son killed himself before he reached 18 when he learned the truth about his father.

"I always thought he had decided to take his life because of a fight with his girlfriend, but they found a letter explaining it, that he had learned that his grandfather was his father," she said.

Ms Gomez said she did not have the courage to report the abuse until now "because since I was a girl he beat me with whatever he had in his hand: a rod or a machete which cut me all over".

Gomez, who denies the charges against him, is being held in prison accused of aggravated sexual abuse with a relative.
While he is behind bars, Ms Gomez said: "I can now walk the streets without fear.
"I feel a great relief even though I seldom leave my house because I feel ashamed."

A judge in Santa Fe described the case as "even worse" than the crimes of Austria's Josef Fritzl in 2008, for the "remarkable amount of violence and the length of time it lasted".

Fritzl was sentenced to life in 2009 for having kept his daughter imprisoned for 24 years, fathering seven children with her and killing one of them.

British Investigators Turn Sight on Soludo

The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Chukwuma Soludo, is under the radar of British crime investigators who want to understand his role in the N29 billion polymer banknote contract issued during his tenure.
Between 2006 and 2009, the Central Bank carried out currency reforms that saw the introduction of polymer bank notes to replace the paper notes of the country’s lower denominations. In late 2009, media reports alleged that top CBN officials had received bribes in order to grant an Australian company, Securency International Pty Ltd, the contract which saw the Australian company supplying Nigeria with at least 1.9 billion pieces of the polymer substrate.

The contract is now the subject of a multi-national investigation straddling Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia, the UK and Nigeria, from which about N3.5 billion was paid out in slush fund. Investigators believe that millions out of the amount were paid to top Nigerian politicians and bank officials.

Gov Fashola's statement enrages Nigerian film makers...

"Let us understand that, they do not dislike you. It’s not that they have a personal quarrel with you but there is an economic opportunity there and that is the best way [pirates] have responded to it." Fashola made the statement at the opening of the Association of Movie Producers (AMP) Eko International Film Festival at the National Theatre, this week.

He referred to pirates  as“our brothers and sisters” and asked movie makers to befriend them and constructively engage them in order to have a win-win situation in the fight against piracy in Nigeria.

Movie practitioners aren't happy about the statement he made...they think he's supporting piracy.
What do you think of Fashola's statement?
