Singer Timi Dakolo weds today

The 2007 West Africa Idol winner is getting married or has already married his girlfriend, Busola, an ex-Zenith bank staff, in Ilorin today. The two already have a son, Alex, who born in September 2010. Timi wanted to keep his wedding away from the press, but then he announced it on Twitter, so now we all know :-). Big congrats to Timi and Busola.

RIP Mary Onyango

Mary Onyango was a 13 year breast cancer survivor and also co-founded the Kenya Breast Health Programme. She was until her death, the deputy chairperson of the National Cohesion Integration Commission (NCIC). She died this morning at Aga Khan Hospital in Kenya after battling breast cancer for over 13 years. Mary's story is that of resilience. She fought the cancer for 13 years and used those years to change the face of breast cancer in Kenya. May she rest in peace.

The story of Ime Anwana; a young lady we should all be proud of

Her story was aired on NTA Newsline on Sunday March 25th 2012. A concerned citizen wrote what you are about to read after watching the programme...

A young lady, Ime Anwana, a Batch "A" corps member, was posted to serve in the NNPC depot in Niger State. She visited a friend serving at a local girls secondary secondary in the nearby village of Kaffin Koro and was told the school has no chemistry teacher.

Ime volunteered to use her free time on Friday evenings to teach chemistry to the students - free of charge. While teaching in the school she saw the sorry state of the student accommodation and took it upon upon herself to do something about it.

She raised the sum of 3.8 million naira and supervised the building of a student hostel equipped with 40 double bunk beds complete with mattresses.

One fateful day, while riding on a motorbike taxi (Okada) on the way to the project site she had an accident that killed the Okada rider and seriously injured her. She spent three weeks in a coma and was bed-ridden for three months.

On the NTA Newsline programme it was shown how the village of Kaffin Koro rolled out the drums to honour Miss Anwana for her work for them. The District Head of the village, Alhaji Abubakar Mamman gave her the chieftaincy title of Jekadiyan Kaffin Koro (Ambassador of Kaffin Koro) and also a piece of land in the village.

Ponder this:

1. Niger State, Ime's host state, is the home state of two former Presidents of the Federal Republic - Generals Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar. Ironically (and sadly), one of them recently hosted a high-profile meeting in the same state to "discuss" the problem in the North. All they need is few minutes trip to Kaffin Koro and they will see the problem staring them in the eyes.

2. In the NTA Newsline report there was neither representation nor acknowledgement of Miss Anwana's work from - or - by her host, Niger State Government.

3. Paiko Local Government, under whose jurisdiction Kaffin Koro falls, has a Local Government Chairman, a State Assembly Representative, a National Assembly Representative and a Senator in Abuja. They all know (or should know) the state of that school long before Miss Anwana left her native Akwa Ibom State and arrived there. Don't you now think that the system is broken?

4. Miss Anwana's action throws a challenge not only to the Mandarins in the Northern political set up but also to young northerners closer to her age who have either silently acquiesced to the status quo or have been driven into the welcome arms of religious extremist due to the dearth of opportunities in the North.

If you are a reading this and you are a northerner - silently admit to yourself that Ime's action has shamed most of us. And then pledge to do whatever you can, no matter how little, to reverse the decline (moral, educational, social, economic) in your community.

Please suggest ways that you think Miss Ime should be honored, so that it will serve as a form of encouragement to those that really have the country at heart (like her good self), not the bunch of rougues we have as our representatives, who think of nothing but how to perpetuate doing what they do best: STEALING THE MONEY THAT CROSSES THEIR WAY & SEARCH AND CART AWAY THE ONE THEY DO NOT SEE TOO.

Please pass the message around, it may luckily reach the THIEVING ROGUES. Even if they do not change, it will prick their conscience, if they have one.

May God cause to bring change to our dear Country in ANYWAY He knows how.

I present to you, the young Lady of distinction, a pride to her people, a paradox of beauty, amiable young Lady, dedicated to her cause to serving her Nation.

Miss Ime Anwana, my friend and sister, my newest Idol especially in a Country where youths have lost vision and have no hope in their tomorrow.

Many of us would have diverted the money for our personal use, imagine what this beautiful Lady accomplished, I just couldn't stop thinking of what this young woman has accomplished in just over 25 years on earth. How wont God receive her into his Kingdom even if she'd died in that fatal accident, but he saved her.

God has blessed me with a very beautiful friend, i wont stop at celebrating this shinning light.

We looked at photos of Blue taken about a WEEK AND A HALF in New York - and compared them with images taken two days ago. In the photos, Baby Blue grew in height about 11%. To put that in perspective, if Blue was the AVERAGE HEIGHT two weeks ago (according to the WTO growth charts) she would have been 22 inches tall. In less than 2 WEEKS, Blue would have grown at LEAST 2.5 inches - making her the size of the average FOUR MONTH OLD. A growth rate like that is almost UNHEARD OF!!!

JAMB releases 2012 UTME results; only 3 candidates scored above 300

The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board has released the results of the 2012 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, and only THREE candidates scored above 300.

This was revealed by JAMB Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, at a news conference in Abuja today. He also said the results of 27, 266 candidates across eight states were withheld for various reasons.

A total of 1,503,931 candidates sat for the 2012 UTME, which held across the country on March 24, with Imo state having the highest number of applicants with 123,865 candidates; Delta came second with 88,876 candidates while Anambra placed third with 84,204 candidates. Abuja recorded the lowest number with 3,380 candidates, Sokoto placed next with 5, 664 candidates while 5,713 candidates sat from Zamfara.

Aston Villa captain, Stiliyan Petrov, diagnosed with acute leukemia

Bulgarian international and Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov, 32, has been diagnosed with acute leukemia. His condition was diagnosed after he developed a fever following a match against Arsenal last Saturday.

Acute leukaemia (cancer of the white blood cells) is fatal if left untreated and the midfielder's condition is said to be progressing rapidly and aggressively and requires immediate treatment. God be with him.

I heard N200 milllion, but Sahara Reporters is reporting N1 billion for his week-long, abi month-long birthday celebration.

Former governor of Lagos, Bola Tinubu had another leg of his  60th birthday celebration at the Teslim Balogun stadium in Lagos yesterday. As SaharaReporters earlier reported, the former governor's month-long event is costing Lagosians and several Action congress states N1 billion with local government areas forced to cough out N10 million each. The government of Lagos state puts in N150 million. Governors of Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Osun, Oyo and Edo states all made N50 million donation each.

The rest of the money was donated by lawmakers and other politicians and contractors who benefit from the largesse dolled out during the former governor's reign in Lagos and beyond.

Wife throws sick actor Prince James Uche out of their marital home

 

The veteran actor has been sick and almost bedridden for over two years now, battling with diabetes and hypertension. Ukrainian teen who posted harrowing hospital bed video describing how she was gang-raped and set on fire, dies

A Ukrainian teen who was gang-raped, dumped in a ditch and set on fire has died days after she posted a tragic online video revealing her ordeal.

Oksana Makar bravely told from her hospital bed how she was raped, strangled and burned by three men in a savage attack which stripped off 55 per cent of her skin.

Her harrowing hospital video, filmed by her mother, emerged after medics had been forced to amputate one of her arms and both her feet in a battle to keep her alive.

 
But after a two-week fight for life, health officials in Donetsk said Oksana, 18, died yesterday of severe burns and damage to her lungs.

The rape attack on Oksana shocked Ukraine with its cruelty, and also caused nationwide protests against corruption after police initially released two of the suspects who had powerful connections in the region.

Two of the suspects were Maxim Prisyjnikov, 23, the son of the regional administrator, and Artyon Pogosyan, 21, the son of the regional prosecutor, according to the Hurriyet Daily News.

The 18-year-old claims she was invited by Prisyjnikov and Pogosyan to their friend Yevgeniy Krasnoshek's apartment, where she was allegedly raped.

 They tried to strangle her to death before wrapping her in a sheet, dumping her in a pit at a construction site and setting her alight, it was alleged in the Kyiv Post.

Miss Makar was found barely alive the following day by a man who heard her moaning. After undergoing surgery, she was finally able to recount her ordeal to police.

She regained consciousness last week Friday, but doctors induced a coma and moved her from a hospital in Mykolayiv to a burn treatment center in Donetsk.

In an interview with Gazeta.ua after the attack, she said: 'I could not feel my body. At first, I was screaming for help.

'But there was nobody there, I began to pray. I thought I had died. I remember it all as if in a fog.'
The three suspects were arrested, but two of them were released later that day due to lack of evidence, according to the Mykolayiv prosecutor’s office.
